Sorry that i havent replied to most of you people, but i already got the software installation problem fixed over 4 weeks ago. I totally forgot about all you guys out there, but no fear, i got the solution. It is caused since its looking for the groups USERS and INTERACTIVE. And guess what? On a foreign XP instalment those groups aren’t there! I don’t understand why they didn’t use group id’s instead of locating the groups on name.
I hacked up a small script that creates the groups USERS and INTERACTIVE and adds your XP username to the groups accordingly.
Download the script here: download (right click and save)
If the script doesn’t work for you, you can also try:
1. right click on my computer -> manage.
2. then click on local users and groups and click on groups.
3. right click at groups and choose “New group…”
4. type in USERS as group name.
5. in the members field, click on the “Add…” button.
6. enter you username and click on “Check Names”
7. click OK to add that user
8. click create when you are done with adding users
Repeat the same steps for creating the INTERACTIVE user group.
This method only works for XP Pro, Home Users need to use NETUSER, more info on use here
I also heard it worked for some people if the installed this package: WindowsXPMediaCenter2005-KB900325-usa.exe
It has been reported that in some cases (not all) it creates those groups.
Good luck!

Thank you it works for me. I’m really grateful; I’m going to post your solution everywhere. I was disappointed, but now that I’m using my Zune happiness has come back. I use your solution with Windows XP SP2 Home in Spanish and its working perfect.
Thanks again = )

I had a VERY knowledgeable Technician from Dell try this fix every which way and he was unable to make it work.
When I contacted Microsoft about this problem they said it was because I had Media Edition 2002.
He said Dell sent out quite a few computers recently with Media Edition 2002 loaded instead of Media Edition 2005. It says on my sales order that I ordered Media Edition 2005, so I called Dell to ask about this.
The Tech man said “the 2002 edition is of such a version that it is really the 2005 edition”? He further stated that Microsoft never made a Media Edition 2002?
So, he found this fix and tried to use it for 1 1/2 hours to fix and install the Zune software with no luck.
I guess I’ll be returning the Zune and purchasing an IPod!

Fix only partially worked for me.
There was no INTERACTIVE group on my XP HOME SP2, only an INTERACTIVE user.
But my problem was solved when checking permissions where Zune was installed.
For some reason the ADMINISTRATORS group had READ ONLY.
I changed permission on this directory to grant the administrators group Full control and after that ZUNE actually started. Before this the install would say it was complete and just close but I could not start the ZUNE software.
I changed permissions by running the following command.
cacls “c:\program files\Zune” /t /e /c /p Administrators:F
I hope this helps the people who tried the above and still could not get the Zune Software to start.
Thanks in advance for everyone got us this far.
