By coincidence i got my hands early on an Microsoft Zune, bought as a regular customer at BestBuy in Union City Landing shopping centre.
They dont seem to care that the release day is next tuesday. They werent displayed in the store itself but i asked a salesmen if i could pre order a Zune. Then he told me they were already in and he could sell one to me. And so he did:
Can someone explain me why it says “Hello from Seattle” on the back?
Download the Zune software here.
Bigger photos here
And this is where i leave you right now. The Zune already drawn its first blood; me. I cant install it for some reason, and i tried everything. If you have any suggestions or ideas, please leave a comment

Can you post more pictures and upload the software installer for us to download? It’d be appreciated

Are you sure you dont have any programs open? Maybe that is the marketplace which is not open until the 14th, so it cant install.
Posted by: pinksage | November 12, 2006 06:36 AM
The almighty knowing zune KNOWS you have turned it on before release day and has decided not to work. Just to spite you.
That sucks dude! Try banging it on the table…
…it worked with the ipod *shrug*
Posted by: Beau Newcomb | November 12, 2006 06:58 AM
You think MS mighta blocked installation until the 14th? I wouldn’t doubt them doing that, but i’m not sure how possible it is…
Posted by: Dick Fickling | November 12, 2006 06:58 AM
man, such a crap!
Posted by: Anonymous | November 12, 2006 07:04 AM
Seems like that asian girl in the last screenshot is really suffering the error… Was that iamge selected intentionally?
Posted by: retorique | November 12, 2006 07:07 AM
Zero Day Install? Maybe the installation won’t work until launch date, and that’s a precautionary measure put in place…
Posted by: dro4life | November 12, 2006 07:08 AM
Perhaps you were unable to install since the release date isn’t until next Tuesday.
Posted by: Crzyland | November 12, 2006 07:10 AM
Is that two chicks making out in the error message page? If so, cool.
You can’t install it yet, because Microsoft hasn’t authorized anyone to do so with their DRM enabled. You weren’t supposed to be able to buy it yet. When big broth…err I mean Microsoft says you can, then you can install it.
Good luck with your Zune. You’ll need it.
Oh, it says “Hello From Seattle” because Microsoft is based in Redmond, and they want to be hip. Unfortunately, that isn’t possible. Ever. Sad really, no more so pathetic.
Posted by: Anon Omous | November 12, 2006 07:13 AM
Return it for an iPod, you’re better off that way!
Posted by: G Man | November 12, 2006 07:15 AM
maybe because it tried to register w/ microsoft and it wont let it until after the actual release.
Posted by: Anonymous | November 12, 2006 07:20 AM
have you tried updating the Windos Installer to the latest version?
The latest version is 2.0
Posted by: omega_ | November 12, 2006 07:24 AM
Return the Zune and buy an iPod. Problem solved.
Posted by: dave | November 12, 2006 07:32 AM
how abt changing the date to a later time? like next year? and try agian ::P
Posted by: v | November 12, 2006 07:34 AM
im thinking the reason it was crashing already is because the zune servers are not ready to handle the new software installations. Cause it states you have to be connected to the net
Posted by: adamrm038 | November 12, 2006 07:38 AM
Only a virgin can install.
Posted by: ghi | November 12, 2006 07:43 AM
Just a guess, but you can’t install because it can’t communicate with whatever it needs to because its not up yet and won’t be until the 14th when it officially launches
Posted by: akijikan | November 12, 2006 07:51 AM
Well, see if there is an EXE file on the CD that will let you install the software directly without having to go through this interface which seems to be a flash file. Also, try disconnecting from the internet. Maybe this will get the installer to install the software which is on the disk instead of trying to find the latest software from the internet (Which microsoft has probably locked until the 14th). Hope this works!
Posted by: Vasudev Kulkarni | November 12, 2006 07:54 AM
It says “Hello from Seattle” because the back of iPods have “Designed in California” on them.
It crashes when you try to install it because the site it needs to connect to isn’t officially live. Insert your own joke about what the girl’s facial expression means in this case.
Posted by: Beowulfed | November 12, 2006 07:54 AM
The Zune software works only on Windows XP and Vista. Do you have XP?
Posted by: Dave73 | November 12, 2006 07:56 AM
Hey man post the .exe file for the zune marketplace on torrents, i’m really anxious to get my hands on it.
Posted by: Bobmikki | November 12, 2006 08:05 AM
maybe the software won’t install until your computers date is the 14th or later.
Posted by: a28ozSlurpee | November 12, 2006 08:12 AM
‘Can someone explain me why it says “Hello from Seattle” on the back?’
Ummm.. because Microsoft is in Redmond but Redmond is about as cool as Michael Bolton so they chose the only place nearby that is cool.
Posted by: Anonymous | November 12, 2006 08:14 AM
It asks you to make sure that your internet connection is working. This probably means that it connects to their service for the software installation. Kind of like the win xp authentication during install. I would guess on release day it will install.
Posted by: josh | November 12, 2006 08:15 AM
maybe the marketplace doesn’t go live until Tuesday?
Posted by: Anonymous | November 12, 2006 08:15 AM
maybe it knows you’re not supposed to have it yet!
Posted by: alex | November 12, 2006 08:19 AM
Hello from Seattle. Im guessing it has to do with the main headquarters being in Seattle. Seattle is where microsoft started and whatnot.
No idea why your zune isnt working. Im pretty sure your VAIO fulfills all the requirements for installing the zune, so good luck with that
Posted by: jei | November 12, 2006 08:19 AM
just a quick question, does connecting the zune and software installation work without having service pack 2? or any auto updates?
Posted by: shaheen | November 12, 2006 08:21 AM
I can’t wait any longer! Willing to Paypal 10 bucks to anyone who can find one in the St. Louis area!
Posted by: Shawn | November 12, 2006 08:28 AM
Change your computer’s date to the 14th and see if you can install. If it is locked by date, that is what it will most likely look at.
Posted by: sTAULKOR | November 12, 2006 08:39 AM
Hello from Seattle is just trying to be like Apple’s ‘Designed in California’.
Posted by: Michael | November 12, 2006 08:47 AM
You cant install it because the release date is next tuesday. the internet connection blocks it until that time. even thought you got your hands on one early, you cant use it until next week. so, sit around and lament.
Posted by: Asher | November 12, 2006 08:52 AM
Thats not true, some ppl got it already installed and running. its only me not working 🙁
Posted by: FLX | November 12, 2006 09:01 AM
guys and gals, I keep on reading that it’s potentially due to the release date that this zune isn’t working, but I doubt thats possible considering the fact that so many review sites (engadget, cnet) have their zunes up and running. my friend you have a defective product. Like it said at the beginning of the post, the week will be very interesting.
Posted by: Nero | November 12, 2006 09:36 AM
Haha, you bought a Microsoft product and expected installation to go smoothly? 😀
Posted by: Samtherocker | November 12, 2006 09:42 AM
It worked for me, and i dont even have it yet..
Posted by: Mike | November 12, 2006 09:52 AM
Well, lets just face it. You will have to wait till the 14th. Two more days! But, it might work before then, you never know. I am thinking about getting the Zune. But, unfortunatly, all my music is on iTunes and I am going to switch over to Mac this month. I have a feeling that the Zune doesn’t support Mac OS’s yet, or if it ever will! haha. But, I guess I will just have to stick to the good ole’ iPod. They just need to make it in Brown!!! haha….and with a bigger screen and better battery life. Though, the one thing that bugs me is that since I have alot of music. It has to sit there for a few seconds and load the music. But, that only bugs me because I am picky. WoooO! Two more days! 🙂
Posted by: Zobi | November 12, 2006 09:55 AM
I was able to install it. Perhaps trying setting your clock forward a week or so, tricking the installer?
Posted by: Tim | November 12, 2006 10:08 AM
I just noticed something!
With the native zune install setup from Packages/ZUNE it says version 1.0.
If i look on Microsoft Update it says that version 1.1 is available but disabled. I hope that release will fix all my pains
Posted by: FLX | November 12, 2006 10:18 AM
Change your skin to Zune Windows theme prehaps?
Nah just joking, That would be weird if it worked only with the Zune Theme for XP huh.
Downloading the software..I’ll tell you how it turns out by posting some pics on my blog.
Posted by: adam | November 12, 2006 10:39 AM
The Zune can wait. That asian looking girl in the second install screen looks hot. 😉
Posted by: thomas | November 12, 2006 10:44 AM
My friend said this:
“good thing the receipt is in the picture
i wouldnt believe they bought it”
My thoughts exactly.
Posted by: Bill Paxton | November 12, 2006 10:50 AM
I believe it won’t install because it interacts with the Zune Marketplace; ZM is likely not live at the time of your installation, probably because of the fact that Zune isn’t to be released until the 14th.
Posted by: ronny | November 12, 2006 10:53 AM
Coz it’s supposed to work in ‘Zune’… and we’re only in November… ha ha ;-))
Posted by: Prasad | November 12, 2006 10:54 AM
Hahaha! “The social” in Britain means “welfare”. Welcome to welfare.
How can that one have got through?
Posted by: Dave R. | November 12, 2006 11:11 AM
Change the date dude.. change it to the vista lauch date and it will work…
Posted by: sandeep george | November 12, 2006 11:12 AM
That’s what you get for installing a Microsoft product on a Sony product. Don’t you know that Microsoft hates Sony and vice versa.
Posted by: James | November 12, 2006 11:31 AM
Is the box a cube like the original iPod.
Man you’d think they could come up with something original.
Oh wait.
It’s M$.
Posted by: kungfumaniac | November 12, 2006 11:31 AM
LOL, But Microsoft is in REDMOND, not Seattle.
Posted by: pinksage | November 12, 2006 11:33 AM
No one has commented on that bizarre error screen. Why does that woman seem to be writhing in pain? Is she upset by Zune crashing? Whatever it is, there is some bizarre intensity happenning in that picture.

Posted by: Jarod | November 12, 2006 12:32 PM
You got a brown one?
Oh well, maybe its like one of the windows genuine advantage things. You running the real deal of windows?
Or it could just be a lockout incase anyone does try to leak the product like BestBuy has accidentally done here.
Posted by: Lawsy | November 12, 2006 12:37 PM
I posted this on Digg, but didn’t know if you’d see it there. I would try to use Memtest86 to find out if you have a bad stick of RAM. Bad RAM can actually cause uncompression issues leading to bad files that won’t pass CRC.
Posted by: Justin | November 12, 2006 12:52 PM
are you running in Admin or limited user? every time Apple updates it’s itunes store software, I can’t install it unless I have admin privliges.
I hope Zune is better than all the buggy itunes software I’ve had.
Posted by: Joe | November 12, 2006 12:53 PM
it worked fine for me..
Posted by: Jerry | November 12, 2006 01:16 PM
i guess that you are not able to install becus its not yet officially released.
i mean…it says that “CHeck that your internet is connected”…
so it might be contacting microsoft’s server and asking for something they havent put up. cus according to them Zune is not yet out!
Posted by: Suman | November 12, 2006 01:34 PM
if you’re musicians www.myspace.com/unzune
Posted by: musicman | November 12, 2006 01:57 PM
its liely that MS jsut blocked the install for the future, have you tryed setting your clock ahead, elementary, but it might work
Posted by: kerimeton | November 12, 2006 02:15 PM
To the gentleperson above reccomending Microsoft Installer 2.0, just wanted to mention they are on 3.0 now http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884016 🙂
Posted by: compugeeke | November 12, 2006 02:15 PM
I just found something that might help. The install log is located under your Documents and Settings\(Your UserName Here)\Local Settings\Temp\. The file is called ZuneInstall.log . I would check this to find out why the install went wrong.
Posted by: Justin | November 12, 2006 02:26 PM
Hahaha they’re punishing you for buying it early.
I love my ipod
Posted by: Sonya | November 12, 2006 02:27 PM

Thanks.
Now i need zune.
Posted by: Aden | November 12, 2006 02:34 PM
“Hello from Seattle” is just a lame rip of “Designed by Apple in California” which appears on all Apple products.
Posted by: D | November 12, 2006 02:41 PM
you are using a vaio notebook… of course the zune setup didn’t work. vaio will only recognise a sony walkman!
haha…
Posted by: little hare | November 12, 2006 02:48 PM
why dont you try installing iTunes?
see if that works… i think it will.
but then you might have to return your Zune and buy an iPod.
Posted by: suresh Kumar | November 12, 2006 02:51 PM
I think it’s all a big conspiracy theory. You get to buy a Zune before the release date, so you can see how “good” it is. But the software just won’t install before the release date.
An ingenius plubicity stunt, with no real publicity value though..
Ah anyway, microsoft sucks in all it’s ways and the Zune will probably suck too.
Good luck with your iZune

i installed it and it works perfectly, i didnt think it would let me install cause i live in europe. also the marketplace is up and running and it lets you buy songs already. now all i need is a zune…..ebay.
Posted by: ray | November 12, 2006 04:31 PM
also i forgot to mention i am very impressed with the software, it is very slick, way better than itunes(not that hard to do imo) and easier to use, also the marketplace is very fast and well organised
Posted by: ray | November 12, 2006 04:34 PM
marketplaces worked for me, everything loaded, took all my songs off of itunes…thank god, took ratings from itunes…
if you want to be social go to a bar
if you want to be like everybody else buy an ipod

Whatever you do do not trade it in for an ipod. Get a Creative zen vision m instead.
Posted by: Brandonson | November 12, 2006 04:40 PM
i cant download the installer it says you are all out of bandwith, could someone else upload the installer
Posted by: Greg | November 12, 2006 05:39 PM
yeah same here
Posted by: dillsnufus | November 12, 2006 05:47 PM
Trying making sure that you have no active internet connection while installing. If you turn off your internet connection and still get errors, check for remanence of the installer in program files, application data or in the registry. Of course, this is all under the assumption that microsoft is blocking the market place like they did with WMP11 for those who tried to downloaed WMP11 without the WGA check 🙂
If worse comes to worse, do what Brandonson suggested, get a Creative Zen Vision:m, well worth it.
Posted by: M. Harris | November 12, 2006 05:51 PM

you people are retarded….the zune doesn’t require internet access. The install would go through you just wouldn’t be able to access the store.
They could install a timebomb on the installer but that would open up too many problems. Disconnect from the internet change the date on your computer and install…

SUGGESTION TO FIX:
(really) close all programs – including those in the systray next to your clock. And disable your antivirus. And kill the other crap Sony has running.
Start –> Run –> “%TEMP%”
delete everything in that folder that you can.
restart.
Install.

on a third note… has anyone else noticed that very little of Mircosoft’s advertising for the Zune, actually has one of them in it… they must realize how much better an ipod looks 🙂
Posted by: tohpa2 | November 12, 2006 08:33 PM
The worst part of all of this – and what nobody has yet mentioned – is that you were instructed to restart your entire computer because a simple installation failed.
Posted by: Azzgunther | November 12, 2006 08:33 PM
Anyone have a link to the setup file that works?
Posted by: jesus | November 12, 2006 08:37 PM
EVEN IF THEY BLOCKED IT
MS IS STUPID
just change ur calendar date and disconnect your internet cable 🙂
Posted by: annonymous | November 12, 2006 08:44 PM
Unplug your network cable and try again. If the installation asks you for internet access then you know Microsoft is requiring the software to register with their servers. if it still fails then try Setting your computers time to the 14th and try again.
Posted by: zer0 | November 12, 2006 08:57 PM
The software probably didn’t install becuase its not supposed to work until the 14th when the Zune actually comes out. I bet it’ll work on the 14th.
Posted by: Zak | November 12, 2006 09:07 PM
How to fix it? Return Zune and buy anything else. I hope MS will not have success with this product, because if they will, everything will end up like it did with Windows. F*** M$

Posted by: msft sucks | November 12, 2006 10:02 PM
hey everyone, microsoft seem to have decided to release zune merketplace officially on zune.net early because of the leak. if you go to zunecorps.com you will find the official real link. also cesar from zuneinsider didnt seem to care that it was leaked early. it seems to be taking everyone a long time to install, i have installed it and its well worth the long wait though.

The Seattle reference is a take on the back of the ipod which says DESIGNED IN CALIFORNIA so of course, they couldn’t do that exactly so they thought they would get all buddy-buddy … though technically they are in Redmond but I guess they were scared no one would understand where Redmond was … good luck with the install – hope it works NEXT Tuesday or maybe the Tuesday after that … or maybe when Vista launches. If you change the screen to a white background, you could use it as flashlight for a couple weeks.

I think the asian girl is laughing her ass off at you for trying to install before the store opens. So are we. I wonder if it goes away on the 14th, but comes back if you try to hack the Zune or use illegally copied music. That would be funny.
Posted by: Master Guru | November 12, 2006 10:27 PM
OK, I downloaded it to give it a try, and I got it to install with no problems at all. Did it get to the part where you had to register for an account? I already had my XBox Live account and used that, and even purchased a song using the points on my XBox live.

Posted by: Jesse Kolb | November 13, 2006 12:19 AM
I read your install log. The error happens when it tries to do WriteRegistryValues. Everything up until then works fine.
If you are a registry hacker, you might browse to the key shown in the log file:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\Rollback\Scripts
I don’t even have the “Rollback” value on my XP machine. You hinted that you had an old Zune software install – maybe it has created something here which is preventing the new one from going forward.
I’d suggest two things. First, check the permissions on this field in the registry and make sure it is writeable. The second option would be to delete the Rollback field entirely, as I said it doesn’t even exist on my machine. Maybe it is only used by Zune and this version doesn’t expect to see such a field.
Back up your computer first!

Shutdown machine, unplug cables, open case, unplug harddrive, remove memory chip, disconnect fan, redo this in reverse order, say a prayer, restart computer, uninstall all other software, install your pathetic looking tool. reboot. Re-install other software (reboot constantly).
Wait until your disk stop spinning. Try to connect to the internet (oh don’t forget to reboot just in case). When connected wait for the error and send the information to Microsoft. Restart browser. And decide that this ain’t gonna work. LOSERS!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with Hal. you shouldn’t be getting a return value of 2 when it tries writing to the key to your registry. I would suggest removing the rollback field entirely, since Hal and myself do not have that value set, so we know that it is not essential.
Posted by: Ember | November 13, 2006 02:20 AM
A second option that I just thought of is that maybe the zune installer is expecting those registry folders to be there so that it may simply just write new reg values rather than write the new paths. In that case if you do not have the rollback folder there try adding in the path yourself that the log specifies that it is trying to write in.

It never seems to occur to anyone that MS deliberately spoofs products, such as the iPod. I mean look at the Zune, look at the iPod… and down to the little, “hello from Seattle” which you all think is dumb. Perhaps it’s Microsoft’s inside joke, no one think of that? They have a sense of humor–check out their Zune marketing film on YouTube which spoofs their own marketing style 😀
Posted by: Anonymous | November 13, 2006 03:09 AM
Hey dude, nice.. but I would suggest you to mask out the serial number so that no one else would use it for registration. I know you can register an iPod under your name using the serial number, not sure about Zune…

you guys are retarted, the store works fine and has been working for months. I’ve had the offical release zune software for almost a month now and it has worked fine. the people having issues should look at the antispyware and antivirus. also installing IE7 and WMP11 helps.

I don’t understand why everyone is suggesting he get an iPod…. Sure, the iPod is a lot thinner than the Zune but why is it always important to have electronic gadgets be so small? I think the big-ness of the Zune is an advantage, it won’t get lost in your pockets, etc. Plus Apple is GAY.

ok, maybe the iPod is “gay” but it isn’t IMPOTENT.
plus: put the zune into your moron ass: it won’t change color.
the only way to “enjoy” it: shit on it. it’ll look and sound the same. it’s the “mister hanky” of mp3 players.
if this is your live style gadget you better change your life or finish it, trash.

As only one person above noted, why should the whole system be brought down and require a restart for something as simple as installing software for an MP3 player?
I guess that this IS a largely Windows crowd, so that’s par for the course for most of you. Just seems rather strange from a Mac user’s perspective.

PS- Thanks for at least trying to use one of these things and “taking one for the team”, so to speak. Maybe Best Buy will take it back and you can exchange it for an iPod?

You guys are morons, the software isnt ‘date locked’. I downloaded the posted one AND the one available for download at Microsoft.com (http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/8/5/58555b76-c739-442a-91ed-f9c650df70bc/ZuneSetup.exe) and they both installed flawlessly.
However, the music store (where you buy all the music and whatnot) is not open until November 14.
And the Zune will not be a flop. The Zune will win a good marketshare. Remember, Microsoft used to own like 45% of Apple, Steve Jobs just came back a few years back to lead Apple, and theres sure as hell a good chance for Microsoft to win this time around. The zune has the options people want, and it will deliver quite well, I’m getting one, I suggest you too.

Posted by: MAtthew | November 13, 2006 10:50 PM
Features people want? Ohhh… you mean the “squirt” feature? Or do you mean the bigger yet same resolution screen that makes video quality less than iPod? Or do you mean the mock click wheel?
As for this post, I can’t believe someone would admit to wanting the crap brown colored Zune.
Posted by: Tyk | November 13, 2006 10:57 PM
You are trying to install a piece of software that is so flaky that the installer needs the whole PC to itself before it can run, and that seems like it may need to embed itself into the operating system (why else would ALL programs NEED to be stopped?) and needs to have the internet switched on before it can install (what if I’m not on the internet, and just want to rip my CDs to listen to?) Of course, you’ll be forced to restart your PC, but I guess that’s not a problem as you already had to close everything anyway.
I honestly don’t think I would want this software anywhere near my PC, especially one I rely on in any way.
Those installation requirements scare me away. Maybe I’m just not cool enough for Redmond…sorry Seattle.

From your install log : “Attempting to enable all disabled priveleges”
Someone who can’t spell is about to take over all privileges on the computer of anyone who installs this. Ooooh, that inspires confidence.

just saw something very dangerous microsoft is doing before the zune launch,,,guys itune is runnin properly and suddenly there is a message from microsoft saying itunes has created an error and needs to close..i push the window down for a while and everythin gin itunes is still operatin perfect,,,microsoft says to report the problem..i chk the report file to see whats going on and find them collecting all the database of songs i have and the podcasts and the number of songs purchased,,,then it just peacfully shuts down the computer itself and nicely starts deleting something from the ipod directory..shit this is funny..though nothing i see as changed on my ipod but for sure they have fucked it up for future..
this is the reason zune did not load on your pc if itunes was working that time…
i have saved all the screen shots and have made a video of this attack..
next this happens with google search and now this one becomes more dangerous ..i see a script which states to search through windows live when i search from google search as a mirror..also today stoped my google desktop search showing error and microsoft asking again to report this error..has anyone else experienced this today?

A wild guess – Did you disable system restore on the system drive (goto computer properties – right clock on my computer) and check. You will need to enable it.
Looking at the log just before the install failure, says there is no system restore sequence available. My experience with WMP is that is always wants to create a restore point. Zune player probably does the same…

Posted by: randomguy1 | November 14, 2006 07:43 AM
Well “Hello from Seattle” definetly refers to Apple. As the first Mac was introduced, it also features the word “Hello” on its screen as Steve Jobs powered it up. I guess they think that they are smart when displaying such messages to copy the coolness factor of Apple. However, all the good designers unfortunately do not reside at Micro$oft (cf brown color) 🙂 .

Thanks for the normal responses vegandude and Stegnar.
vegandude: I looked up the system restore settings, but system restore is turned on.
Stegnar: I dont really know what i can do with that info, but i tried to install the software under the Administrator account but it makes no difference. I didnt edit my user btw, so i should have almost as many priviledges as the Administrator account.
Thanks for the suggestions, i’ll keep on looking!

Wow…i had several emails from other people that have this issue.
Ok, here is the deal: i talked for about an hour with MS and they didnt came to any conclusion. One thing they did mentioned was that it maybe didnt install since i have an dutch (legit) windows xp sp2 professional edition, but personally i think its lame to draw such an conclusion. I said that i also had reports from people who have an US xp installment and still cant get it to install. Can someone please conclude this at a pc where its failing. I know its alot of work but i really would appreciate if someone could install the US xp version on the pc that is failing to install the Zune software.
Anyway, the person from customer service said this issue will be escalated directly to MS Zune dev department, and I’ll have someone from that department to call me within 48 hours. Until the call, hold on tight. At least i got their attention Smiley

Dennis

Posted by: answertoyourproblem | November 15, 2006 05:27 AM
Hello from lame-land!
I can fix your problem and make your life a little better in 3 easy steps:
1. Take that receipt and the Zune back to Best Buy. Tell them you’d like to execute a return.
2. Use the money they give you to purchase an Apple iPod. They come in any color you want, as long as it’s black or white. Definitely not sh*t brown. Plus – the unpacking experience is almost exactly the same – so no problem there! (Looks like Microsoft unpacked a few iPods in their day…)
3. While you’re at it, sell the Sony and buy a Macbook. You can even match your new iPod – black or white! The Macbook comes with the software already installed. No more installation problems! Plus – if you really miss all the problems, you can even run XP on it!
Posted by: Creep | November 15, 2006 05:44 AM
I figured it out! It didn’t install because it’s a piece of crap! Resolve that whole “piece of crap” issue and I think everything should work fine.

Done!!!
Add groups called USERS and INTERACTIVE to your XP an add yourself as a member. Done.
Now everything works fine.
;->
There is an error in the installer package. It is looking for an English Version!
I think your XP is not English…

Zune and virus? – The Zune game
Nov. 14. 2006, Microsoft launched officially the Zune. Will the new MP3 Player fulfill the dreams of the Redmont Managers and live up to be the long hyped iPod Killer by conquering the USA like a wildfire? Will the US become a social welfare country (welcome to the Social)? Or will filthy lucre prevail in the form of Microsoft-Points? A sea of questions and no answers in sight. Only time will tell which rumor-site or analyst had the best crystal ball.
One thing seems to be certain – zuner or later a special Zune-Virus will surface. And that’s where our Zune-Game starts: Who can guess the exact date of the first appearance of a Zune-Virus? With just $1 for every date you pick your part of the fun. And whoever gets the right (or closest to the right) date will win an MP3 Player. Just follow this link to the Zune-Game and some insight info http://happymac.ch/happyMacEN/News/8CFCDC04-D0AF-4A5D-A77C-EC6ED6B1A641.html

I’m surprised so few people bring up the DRM. If you thought the DRM of the iTunes Music Store was a pain (which can be ‘eliminated’ using a simple plug-in/script and iMovie), the DRM on the Zune is like being handcuffed, put in an iron maiden, and raped.
Anyone who doesn’t have an issue with the DRM requirements of the Zune is either already working on hacking it, or is contributing the growing problems and scams of legal online downloading.

You said system restore is turned on, but did you ensure you have a large enough space left on your drive to handle a new restore point? How much space on your system drive have you allocated to system restore points?

It looks like MSI tried to pull new microcode down remotely to reflash the unit to the latest version and it failed, probably because they’re not letting anyone update until the official release date. Try to install offline or wait. It might me a mess doing either after the failure, unless they’ve taken that into account after numerous complaints by early adopters….

Here is rule of thumb if ever someone wants to purchase a Zune (or any Microsoft product): PATIENTLY WAIT so that the bugs can get worked out before buying, and if they can’t – stick with Ipod.
Wouldn’t life be a lot easier this way.

Never Buy Crap.

I’m a dedicated iPod/Mac user. The Zune certainly isn’t for me, and i hope it doesn’t capture much market share. However, i think the brown version looks quite nice and i feel kinda bad for mr. FLX with all you uppity mac users talking poop about his purchase.
iPods have their own problems – most people i know have had to replace batteries, a few have had to get them fixed for other problems. Apple was quite shitty with me about my 2nd gen. iPod and the repairs it needed.
All this trash talk is so silly.

As a user who has worked and played on both platforms and just prefers Macs so much that when I’m forced to deal with Windows, I just assume things will take twice as long and MS will record everything I do… I do hope you don’t think we are all just being mean. Apple folks are usually nice and we frolic in the woods, but when someone seems to voluntarily support a company that has been repeatedly found guilty of monopolistic practices and shows obvious signs of stealing more than innovating, they tend to stand in wonder. Why? Why does brown plastic soaked in Prestone look good to anyone? Why do people mock Apples mp3 player “monopoly” but not see MS’s bigger pc monopoly? Why does the Zune look like it was designed by a Walmart store designer who ran out of Prozac?
So sorry for the mean statements, but sometimes folks are hard to fathom.

And this is just another reason the Zune has very little chance of replacing the iPod as the top MP3 player in the market…
Another good article to read is located at: http://tinyurl.com/y6crmc
They point out that the Zune music store is essentially a store that only accepts gift cards and that if you want to buy one song, it will cost you more than five songs do at the iTunes Music Store.

I dig the hot error message–way to reward the user for something going wrong, Microsoft!
Here’s what they might want to make the Windows Vista BSOD look like.

I work on both macs and pc’s and though I prefer all Apple products to Microsoft, clearly you’re not going to change your system and platform because of just the Zune. However, I don’t like how Windows always forces restarts, system repairs, etc. and then on top of that, you’re always searching for patches and drivers. It’s just too much effort when compared to the iPod or a mac – that, I will say. Even as a mac user, there have been faulty releases with our products as well – take iTunes 7 for example, a lot of people had issues at first. I don’t want to be cocky and tell you to go out and buy a mac, but if your Zune isn’t working by the time your refund/return date has expired, then I would advise you to take it back and get an ipod. Microsoft has never been good at testing products so unfortunately, if you keep this, you’ll have to deal with their errors and patches, etc. Also, just in case, I would back up your entire music library as well as your hard drive. “Good luck from Boston” 😛

I think those asian are carzy and they are attempting to do a log roll. Just look at the girl who’s eyes are closed. She just got rolled over by the “lesbians”….See that makes sense doesn’t it? OK you’re correct Redmond is lame and so is the Zune. Just in case you wanted to know, yes I’m Asian and I hate lame asian chicks, they give us a bad name.

Does anyone know why H.264 compliant movies that work perfectly in itunes and on an ipod, and natively in QT won’t run on a Zune?
I’ve spent a long time converting a video library to HD and compressing to h.264 and none of videos will run on a Zune.
I get an error msg saying codec not supported.
So much for .m4v and h.264 support. thanks microsoft for delivering utter crap once again.
Maybe I should repack it and give it to someone I hate for xmas. Or better yet, if I leave it in a paper bag someone will mistake it for a turd and stomp on it.
do us all a favour next time, just mark the box – ‘unusable crap from seattle’.

try running the installer exe in XP SP2 compatibility mode (it should be in the properties dialog for the file) — you may have to copy the installation folder to your computer to do this…

crap. just bought myself a zune, brought it back home to Sweden, just to find out that it wouldnt work on a computer running Windows XP SP2 – in Swedish!! Man, what was i thinking? Believing that I could actually install the most modern Mp3-player on the market on a computer running the most modern version of the biggest operating system from the SAME manufacturer? phew, I was more than just a LITTLE optimistic there…

It doesn’t work because it sucks. Only an idiot would buy a zune. What kind of fucked up name is zune anyway? Keanu says”it’s like Dune with a z instead of a d, bodacious!” How about that fake fucking scroll wheel imitation plastic, craptacular design failure. If you really had to buck the system and forgo an ipod, you could have atleast used your brain and bought a Sansa. Fuck one of those Sony eggturd things would be better than a Zune.

wow Steve Jobs must have catholic priests green with envy… so many Apple fanboys sucking his dick over an mp3 player.
why do you all feel so passionately about Apple?
Does Apple provide you sustenance? Did they bathe you and feed you as baby? You all act like they did.. where were your own parents?
I don’t have the money yet, but I’m definitely buying a Zune when I do. The iPod is iOld and so are all of you iFanboys.

Finally Able to intall my zune sofware. To fix the installtion error that is diplayed above, follow these step and it would work. 1- on my computer, right click manage, select eventviewer, select application. Two possible error will appear.Product zune error 1317 attempting to create directory or product error 1303, unsufficient privilege. To solve this. Reboot Pc, select F8 to reboot in safe mode, go to C:\document and setting\all users\document\my music, right click, then property,
select security, select advance, check the full control for administrator. you can also give the righs on all users, ” Right click all user, select property, select security, select advance and give full control to aministrator. Now reboot in normal mode and intall the software. It should intall without any problem. Easy answer, but I took me 5 days, it should have taken me 1 hour. Zune support tech did not even know how to do it. Good luck. JAtis

ZUNE SOFTWARE INSTALLATION potential FIX. I install zune about 6 times, and after 100 percent install, I get the error,.failled to lunch the zune software, please reinstall. ( or something to that line with the 3 lesbians woman laughing/crying) What I’ve notice is, even when you log in as admin to the PC, the location where the Zune software installs the file SOMETIME does not have admin rights. I said sometime because I had no issue installing it on another PC and a nightmare installing it on another. Both PC are Win Xp Sp2 with WMp 10.
To fix the installation error that is displayed above, follow this step and hopefully it works for you. 1- On my computer, right click, select manage, select event viewer, select application. Open the zune RED X application error. Two possible errors will appear, product zune error 1317 attempting to create directory or product error 1303, insufficient privilege. For both errors, the location will appear: c:\document and setting \all users\document\my music. The objective now is to see the rights on this folder location. (Admin to the PC, is not necessarily admin to the folder where zune install writes to during setup???(Weird). NOW, reboot Pc, select F8 to reboot in safe mode, go to C:\document and setting\all users\document\my music, right click, then property, uncheck Read only box, select security, select advance, and check the full control for administrator. You can also try to give full control rights to the all users folder, but I did not have to do that. Now reboot in normal mode and likely the software will install.
No one should go to such hell just to install new software. As a result, we do not want to fix it, ( and should not have to) so we reinstall it 5 to 10 times with the same result.
Hopefully that helps at least one person…if so let me know. Zune support tech level 1 & 2 did not even know how to go about it. Good luck.
JAtis
